After a competitive tryout at Lincoln Tower Park, which sits in the shadow of Ohio Stadium, The Ohio State University Marching Band has selected its drum majors for the 2026 season.

Ben Fox, a rising sophomore, is the 67th drum major of the Ohio State University Marching Band, and Jacob Snyder, a rising sophomore, is assistant drum major. Fox and Snyder were among seven candidates who competed — all current members of D-Row, the band’s drum major training squad.

Each candidate performed the traditional pregame ramp entrance (including the high strut from the north side of the field, the backbend and the goal-post toss), an individual twirling routine set to music and a series of five high aerial tosses. Judges included previous drum majors and members of the band staff, and student musicians from the spring Athletic Band and 2025 Marching Band provided the musical accompaniment.

Fox, a mechanical engineering major from Upper Arlington, has been training for this position for over four years.

“Honestly, it still doesn’t feel real. Hearing my name called was one of those moments you dream about. I’m beyond excited for what’s ahead and incredibly grateful for the opportunity to lead this band that means so much to me.”

Fox is the first head drum major to come from Upper Arlington. “To be the first head drum major at Ohio State from Upper Arlington makes it even more meaningful! It's incredibly rewarding to represent the community that shaped me and supported me in my journey.”

Snyder, a zoology major from Gahanna, is excited for the upcoming season. “To be able to be a part of this organization is an honor. Getting to perform at games and events this fall will be so special. I am so thankful for the support from my family and friends."

“We have two terrific performers and leaders who have earned their spots today. This was a very close tryout, and I give my applause to all seven candidates who tried out. I’m really looking forward to working with Ben and Jacob this season,” said Christopher Hoch, Director of The Ohio State University Marching Band.

Fox and Snyder are the first two students to have secured their spots for the 2026 marching band. All others will try out in mid-August.
