New Drum Majors Named

New drum majors pose with batons on the OSU practice field.

The Ohio State University Marching Band has a new head drum major, Nathan MacMaster, and new assistant drum major, John LaVange, for the 2015 season. Tryouts were held Saturday, April 25, in the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. The event was held for the first time alongside tryouts for the popular Brutus Buckeye mascot.

Judges graded MacMaster and LaVange, along with two other contenders, Daniel McCullough and David Williams, as they demonstrated their skills in the ramp entrance, a twirling routine and five high aerial tosses.

MacMaster is a graduate student in the John Glenn College of Public Affairs. From Reynoldsburg, Ohio, he has served as assistant drum major for the 2013 and 2014 seasons. LaVange, a freshman from Howland, Ohio, is majoring in accounting. He served as drum major at Howland High School for two seasons, and was on the drum major training squad at Ohio State for the 2014 season.
