The OSU Athletic Bands

Winter Qtr Pep Band at the 2003 Men's Basketball Championship in Chicago

The Athletic Bands are non-auditioned groups and open to any student at OSU with prior high school (or equivalent) instrumental experience. They are completely separate ensembles from the OSU Marching Band, though some students play in both. Each Athletic Band features full contemporary concert band instrumentation, including woodwinds. The course number for Athletic Band is Music 205.02.

See the University Registrar's website for course registration information.

During Autumn Quarter the Athletic Band is referred to as the "Fall Band" and meets Wednesdays from 6:30 - 7:48 PM in the Joen Zieg Steinbrenner Band Center (listed as ST 0161 in the course bulletin). Winter and Spring bands meet twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday from 4:00 - 5:48 PM. All Athletic Band courses are now worth two credit hours and grading is based solely on attendance to rehearsals and performances (spring band has a music memorization check before the Spring Football Game). Due to the large enrollment each quarter, the band typically splits into two or three groups and shares performances. This means that any student in the band who can not make an event can usually find someone to cover his or her spot without affecting their grade.

Fall and Winter quarter bands provide spirited music for seasonal sporting events at OSU including Men's and Women's Basketball, Hockey and Women's Volleyball. Fall band regularly plays in the Homecoming Parade and the Spring Band performs pre-game and halftime for the spring football game in Ohio Stadium as well as an annual concert in the Browning Amphitheater at Mirror Lake.
